About the Artist

Award winning artist Glenn McWaters lives in Birmingham, Alabama, USA.  He attended Auburn University.  Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the Marine Corps.  He attended flight school and became a helicopter pilot.   He was wounded in Viet Nam.  While recovering at the Naval hospital in Memphis, TN, he met his future wife, Lynn.  They have been married over 40 wonderful years, have two awesome children and several fabulous grandchildren.

During Glenn’s last military assignment at Quantico, Virginia, he became an artist.  Although he had been drawing all of his life, he had never undertaken painting.  A neighbor of Glenn’s was one of the most outstanding artists in the northeast.  He encouraged Glenn to transfer his drawing skills to the canvas.  Glenn’s first painting was of Belle Grove plantation.  This magnificent 77 room plantation was completed in 1857.  It was the property of John Andrews and stood on 7,000 acres of sugar cane in Louisiana.  In 1921, a drought in the area caused bankruptcy for its owner.  The house was vacant for over 30 years.  In the early 1950s, a group of local college students accidentally set fire to the ruins and it was burned to the ground.  Using a black and white photo taken in 1945, Glenn provided his own color to the structure.  The painting brought rave reviews from the local artists.

Upon completion of his Marine Corps duty, Glenn became national sales manager for a company, then started his own business while coaching numerous world class track athletes.  He also continued to paint.  Glenn officially retired from Samford University in June, 2008, where he had been the Head Track and Cross Country Coach for 13 years.  He has a studio in his home where he can paint and display his work.

Glenn is inspired by "God's beauty, which is all around us.  I love painting.  My wife, who is a very talented photographer, takes photos for me.  She is also my toughest critic.”

He loves painting people, places and some animals.  If you would like more information about how to purchase a painting, print or how to commission a portrait or other work of art, contact Glenn via telephone or e-mail.
